New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
