Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in the North East

The artist has given the complete sum of his £25,000 award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the UK's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was awarded the award on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The money supported venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges caused by flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is not the first artist to contribute his award funds to worthy causes.

In Pulp won the trophy in 1996 for their record Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the group would contribute their winnings to the charity War Child.

During 2002, artist she shared her award across multiple charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

In recent years, the band donated their funds to the community center that supported their act, in addition to other local music groups.

Also winners that year they gave their award to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our success touched somebody else's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were acquired under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the properties.
